Whether you want to spend some time outside, tell Santa Claus what you want for Christmas, or get creative with some friends, there’s something for everyone in Ames this winter!
1. Reiman Gardens
The Reiman Gardens have so many fun winter events for families and adults! Take your little ones to the Caterpillar Club and the Butterfly Blizzard to watch caterpillars become butterflies before their very eyes! For those 21 and older, there is Botanicals & Booze, where you can sip on adult beverages and make decorations for your home. 2. Cyclone Basketball
Cyclone Men’s and Women’s basketball is in full swing! Check out a home game and experience Hilton Magic!

3. Iowa State Center - Performing Arts
A Magical Cirque Christmas, The Color Purple, Russian National Ballet: Swan Lake, and Siberian State Symphony Orchestra are some of the shows that can be seen at the Fisher Theater, Scheman Building, and Stephens Auditorium this winter. For all of the shows, click here.
4. Winter Marathon
Can you walk, run, bike, or snowshoe an entire marathon this winter? Get outside and enjoy the beautiful winter sights at McFarland Park. Don’t forget to record your miles! Find out more here.
5. Winter Hike Series
Explore local nature trails in Ames this winter. Hikes will begin at 1:30 pm on the following days and locations:
Jan. 3 – E-18 Greenbelt Access
Jan. 10 – Reactor Woods
Jan. 17 – Dakins Lake
Jan. 24 – McFarland Park
Jan. 31 – Robison Wildlife Acres
Feb. 7 – Emma McCarthy Lee Park

6. Ames Public Library
The Ames Public Library has events occurring daily for families and adults of all ages. Whether you want to speak French, create arts and crafts, or play Dungeons and Dragons, there’s something for everyone at the Library!

7. The Workspace, Memorial Union
Create winter-themed crafts at The Workspace in the ISU Memorial Union. You can do a walk-in craft, check out a dance class, or purchase art from local Ames and ISU artists.

8. Boone County
See a room full of Christmas trees at the Iowa Arboretum, go skiing or snowboarding at Seven Oaks, or take a steam-powered train ride at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad.
9. Ames Ice Arena
Whether you'd like to work on your figure skating or catch an ISU hockey game, check out the Ames/ISU Ice Arena this winter! Check out all of the rates and events here.
10. Ames Main Street
Visit all of the local shops on Ames Main Street! Warm yourself up at one of our coffee shops, or buy Christmas gifts at one of our boutiques. Ames Main Street is a great place to experience the community and experience the things that Ames uniquely offers.
