JCG Land Services, Inc. is a private, employee-owned right of way consulting firm.  They provide professional land and/or easement acquisition services for any public works and infrastructure improvement projects for our city, county and state public agency clients; and large-scale wind, electric, solar, and gas projects for large utility clients throughout the Midwest. Learn more about JCG in this Q&A from their Vice President/COO, Jay Walton.

What is your business celebrating? Why are you hosting a ribbon cutting?

After 25 years of living life trying to build a thriving private company from an idea and a risk, we thought it was time to take a break and celebrate our accomplishment.  As a Chamber member, we found out a ribbon cutting was an option for us, so we want to take advantage of the opportunity and share the experience with the rest of our staff.

Why Ames / Story County? Why this location?

As the founders and original employees of JCG, we all lived in the Ames/Nevada area, so we moved our office from our initial location in Ankeny to Nevada in 2000.  Nineteen years later, we have offices at multiple locations in Nevada, as well as offices in Cedar Rapids, Urbandale, and Leon, Iowa.  In Nevada, we are centrally located between our other offices and close to the interstate for our travels to our project locations throughout the Midwest.

What motivated you to open or grow your business?

Our typical scope of services was a very different process than the parent consulting engineering firm we were working for prior to establishing JCG.  Rather than continue the relationship, we decided it was in our best interest to become an independent company.  Despite the risks, we had confidence in each other, hope for the future, and supportive wives and families.  So, we said, "Why not"?

What some key things have helped your business grow?

Our success has been a result of focused recruiting, hiring, and retaining the best employees; maintaining the highest level of professionalism; providing the best value to our clients; and providing an engaging environment for employees to thrive and grow as much as possible.
