In 1881 S.S. Merrill platted a village and called it Huxley after his uncle, Thomas Henry Huxley, a renowned British biologist and writer in the 19th Century. Huxley was incorporated on August 27, 1902. Over the past century Huxley has grown into a well-rounded community.
Because of Huxley’s location between Des Moines and Ames as well as its direct access to I-35,Iowa 210, and U.S. Highway 69, it has experienced rapid growth over the last decade. With the 2000 census,Huxley had a population of 2,316. With the completion of the 2010 census the population had grown to 3317, a growth of over 43% from the 2000 Census!
Each year, the City of Huxley sponsors Prairie Fest which celebrates Huxley’s spirit of tradition.
