Huxley Profile

In 1881 S.S. Merrill platted a village and called it Huxley after his uncle, Thomas Henry Huxley, a renowned British biologist and writer in the 19th Century.

Over the past century Huxley has grown into a well-rounded community. Because of Huxley's location between Des Moines and Ames as well as its direct access to I-35, Iowa 210, and U.S. Highway 69, it has experienced rapid growth over the last decade. With the 2000 Census, Huxley had a population of 2,316. After completing a special census in 2006, the population had grown to 2,959, a growth of over 27%. It is currently estimated that the city's population is 3,317, which reflects a growth of over 31% since the 2000 Census!

Each year, the City of Huxley sponsors Prairie Fest, which celebrates Huxley's spirit of tradition.
